Principal Scientist - Material Synthesis Lead

Summary:
This individual will join the membrane department within Dexcom's research and development organization. This is an exciting leadership opportunity for an enthusiastic scientist with a clear understanding of the technical and regulatory challenges of developing and validating a material used in a class III medical device. The individual is expected to provide technical expertise and leadership in the development and implementation of novel materials to be used in future CGM products. The individual will also collaborate and communicate outside of the R&D organization, interacting with operations, supply chain, quality assurance and other departments.
Essential Duties and
Responsibilities:
Responsible for scientific oversight on novel material synthesis and scale up, manufacturing process qualification and implementation into future CGM products
Lead new material implementation projects; coordinate meetings to present and discuss project scope and progress; lab space and resource planning; define product/equipment specifications and process boundaries; oversee budget and timelines
Work closely with raw material suppliers, venders, independent labs, etc. on related projects
Proactively identify potential issues and develop effective solutions to technical challenges
Design and conduct experiments, analyze data and scientific findings and summarize in presentations and reports
Develop, write, and edit existing SOPs; ensuring valid and accurate information
Provide scientific leadership and development of lab personnel and support team
Promote a safe work environment. Participates in Environmental Health and Safety programs. May provide recommendations on maintaining the safety of the work environment and address corrective actions whenever a hazard is identified

Required
Qualifications:
Typically requires a PhD in Material Sciences/Engineering, Polymer Chemistry or related material science field with 8-10
years of industry experience in a related field
Demonstrated expertise in polymer synthesis in a production setting: working knowledge of applicable regulatory guidance, GMP/GLP regulations, manufacturing equipment and process control
Accomplished in developing robust scale-up and production processes to meet specifications and quality objectives
Experience in project management and working with cross-functional team and suppliers
Advanced knowledge of polymer characterization techniques: GPC, DSC, NMR, etc
Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
Preferred
Qualifications:
Demonstrated good technical writing and presentation skills in professional journals or conferences
Experience with materials used in medical devices
Self-motivated with a strong sense of urgency requiring minimal oversight by immediate manager
Experience with critical parameter management and six sigma methodology
Strong knowledge in data analysis software such as JMP

Language Skills: Must be able to communicate effectively in English. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
